No bird feeder is weatherproof in every UK garden. A broad roof helps with falling rain, but wind drives water sideways and enclosed reservoirs can still collect condensation. The best covered feeder is easy to inspect, drains rather than trapping water and comes apart fully when food gets damp.
The LONA three-compartment feeder offers the most substantial built-in shield here. The Kingsyard recycled feeder is a more conventional enclosed four-port model, while RSPB My Favourites suits a small covered portion.
Best overall: LONA three-compartment covered feeder
The LONA combines an 840ml clear body with three separate food compartments, three feeding ports and a broad mushroom-shaped overhead shield. The controlled capacity is more useful than an enormous reservoir because you can offer variety without leaving a large volume outdoors.
Its roof gives the ports more overhead coverage than a narrow cap. Separate compartments can also prevent one food from dominating the whole reservoir, provided every section is appropriate for the season and visiting birds.
Those sections create more corners. Inspect the dividers and lowest feed channels for damp fragments, and confirm that the body dismantles far enough for each surface to be brushed and dried. “Weatherproof” in the product wording should be read as a design aim, not a guarantee.
Best conventional covered feeder: Kingsyard recycled-plastic model
The Kingsyard uses an enclosed recycled-plastic reservoir, viewing panels, four metal feeding ports, a lift-off roof and a removable base. It is closer to a traditional house-shaped hopper while keeping food behind port openings rather than spreading it over a broad tray.
The removable base is its strongest practical feature because the lowest part of a gravity-fed feeder is where damp seed can collect. Four ports also give several birds access without a large open platform.
Its stated three-pound capacity is too much for many gardens. Begin with a small fill and watch the base rather than the top. The roof can make a full reservoir look protected while food below has already stopped flowing.
Best compact covered feeder: RSPB My Favourites
RSPB My Favourites is a small roofed hanging feeder designed for seed or mealworms and birds able to cling to the feeding surface. Its compact portion and visible food area make changes easier to spot than they are inside a large hopper.
Choose it when shelter and modest capacity matter more than serving several birds simultaneously. The food format is more specialised than an ordinary seed tube, and current seasonal guidance affects when seed can be offered.
Its small roof reduces direct rain but cannot block every angle. Position it under some shelter without hiding the feeder in dense vegetation or beneath a bird roost.
A roof is only the first line of defence
Compare the roof with the width of the feeding ports. A cap that barely extends past the body may stop vertical rain while doing little in wind. A larger dome offers more coverage but catches more wind and adds weight to the hanger.
Look below the roof as well. Ventilation lets moisture escape, drainage gives incidental water somewhere to go and smooth internal slopes keep food moving. A sealed-looking feeder can be worse if condensation has no route out.

Driven rain, condensation and food flow
After rain, check the lowest food first. Seed near a port is exposed to wet beaks, damp air and water carried along the perch. Clumps, swelling, discoloration or a stale smell mean the food should be discarded.
Do not top up a feeder that has stopped flowing. Empty it fully and find the blockage. If the internal route is difficult to see or reach, that is a reason to choose a simpler design.
Move the feeder out of the prevailing rain where possible. A sheltered wall bracket or open position beneath an overhang can outperform a larger roof in the middle of an exposed garden, provided birds retain visibility and a safe escape route.
Materials and wind exposure
Metal roofs resist chewing but add weight and can move noisily. Clear plastic shields let you inspect the feeder but may scratch or become brittle. Recycled plastic can be durable, yet its recycled content does not tell you how well a specific hinge, port or closure will last.
Check the hanger and mounting point with the feeder partly filled before increasing the load. If a broad roof makes the body twist or collide with a wall, move it rather than adding more restraint or weight.
Cleaning and drying
RSPB hygiene advice says food should be kept as dry as possible and feeders cleaned at least weekly. A covered feeder needs the same schedule as an uncovered one.
Remove roofs, dividers, ports and bases where the design allows. Wash, rinse and leave every enclosed cavity open until dry. A roof that slows rain can also slow evaporation after cleaning, so do not reassemble too soon.
Current guidance advises feeding seed from 1 November to 30 April and pausing from 1 May to 31 October. Wash and store seasonal feeders completely dry during the pause.
