A baffle is useful only when a squirrel cannot bypass it from a fence, branch, shed or neighbouring hook. Measure the whole site before comparing the hardware.

Best large clear pole-mounted guard. Drawback: it is a pole-only solution and still needs enough height and open clearance to work properly.

Our recommended setups
1. Urban Deco baffle station: best integrated option
This 91-inch station combines four hanging points, a forked ground base and a smooth pole-mounted baffle. Because the baffle is supplied with the station, it avoids some of the guesswork around clamps and pole diameter.
The station also includes a mesh tray and water dish. Remove the mesh food tray under current flat-feeder guidance, and consider positioning water separately so it is not directly beneath active feeders. The baffle cannot compensate for a branch or fence within jumping distance.
2. 251cm four-hook station: best tall adjustable option
This four-hook station provides adjustable height, a pole baffle and removable dishes. Extra height can help establish clearance, and the four hooks leave room for several contained feeder types.
The listing is generic, so after-sales support and replacement-part clarity are weaker than with an established manufacturer. Check every joint on arrival, use only in ground that will hold the base firmly and return it if the baffle clamp or sections do not lock securely.
3. Gardman A04389 plus iBorn baffle: best retrofit route
Gardman's A04389 is a widely available 226cm station with three hooks. The separate iBorn baffle is a 19.6-inch pole guard listed for poles between 16 and 32mm, which includes the diameter of many feeding stations.
This route lets you replace one component at a time. It is not a guaranteed pair: confirm the current Gardman pole diameter and make sure joins or accessory brackets do not prevent the baffle sitting at the necessary height before ordering both.
Why position matters more than the label
A squirrel can leap from fences, branches, roofs and furniture. Put the station in an open area with generous horizontal and overhead clearance, then observe the actual approach routes. A baffle below the feeders only blocks an animal climbing that pole.

Fit the baffle correctly
Check the supported pole-diameter range and use every clamp or adaptor exactly as directed. The guard must not wobble, slide down or leave a grippable route at its centre. A broad smooth baffle generally presents a harder route than a small decorative cone, but size alone is not proof of performance.
Leave enough room above the baffle for feeders to hang freely. If a long feeder touches it, the squirrel gains a bridge and birds may be startled by movement.
Choose the feeders separately
The station solves mounting, not access to each feeder. A squirrel that reaches the crown may still chew plastic lids or pull a light feeder sideways. Metal fittings, secure lids and guarded or weight-activated feeders add another layer.

Stability and cleaning
A taller pole increases leverage in wind. Install the base vertically in firm ground and recheck it after heavy rain. Do not load every arm with a heavy guardian cage if the pole begins to flex.
Clean feeders at least weekly and clear the ground below. Wipe the pole and baffle too: greasy residue and droppings are a hygiene issue, while accumulated dirt can make a once-smooth guard easier to grip.
Frequently asked questions
Are squirrel-proof feeding stations really squirrel-proof?
No station can guarantee that in every garden. A properly fitted baffle in an open position can stop the common route straight up the pole, but nearby launch points or poor installation can defeat it.
Can I add a baffle to my existing station?
Often, provided the baffle supports the pole diameter and can be fitted without obstruction from joints, hooks or trays. Measure the straight pole section and check the installation method first.
Does a feeding-station tray help with squirrels?
No. A tray can become a landing platform and, when used for food, creates the flat shared surface that current RSPB guidance advises against. Remove it rather than treating it as a seed catcher.
